A 3D model, STEP or IGESThe shop programs from it. Without a model the machining is quoted from the drawing and priced with a margin for surprises.
A PDF drawing, not just the modelWeld symbols, tolerances and notes live on the drawing. A model on its own carries none of them and gets quoted conservatively.
Overall size envelope, length by width by heightThe first thing that rules a shop in or out. A frame can be welded far larger than it can be machined in one setup.
Finished weight, even approximateDecides the table load, the crane and sometimes the freight method. It rules out shops faster than anything except envelope.
Quantity now and expected annual quantityChanges the fixture decision. A shop that knows five more are coming will quote tooling and price the parts lower.

Full grade designation including suffixS355J2 is not S355JR. The suffix carries an impact requirement, and the L in 316L is a carbon limit that protects the joint.
Plate thicknesses usedDrives weld volume, preheat, distortion and whether stress relief is realistic.
Whether mixed grades are used and whereA dissimilar joint is its own qualification case. The drawing has to say which grade is which.
Material certificate requirementEN 10204 3.1 or equivalent, per heat. Normal on structural work and a real record keeping cost, so it belongs in the quote not the delivery note.

A weld symbol on every joint, or a general note covering the restWithout symbols the shop chooses for you, and it chooses generously because it carries the risk.
Weld size on every filletFillet volume rises with the square of the leg. An 8 mm fillet where 5 mm was needed is roughly two and a half times the weld metal.
Leg or throat stated, and the drawing standard namedAWS and ISO conventions differ. Confusing leg with throat undersizes a joint by roughly thirty per cent.
Intermittent welds used wherever loading allowsA quarter of the weld metal and far less distortion. The shop will not assume it is permitted.
Weld quality level, per joint or per groupISO 5817 level B across a whole frame is the most expensive single line on a weldment drawing. Level B where it is loaded, C elsewhere.
Welding code namedAWS D1.1, an EN ISO qualified procedure or whatever applies. Without it the shop fills in the gap and the quotes stop being comparable.
Whether tacks and temporary attachments stay or are removedLifting lugs, strongbacks and run-off tabs help the shop. Removing and dressing them is a line item.

A weld map numbering the weldsAn hour to produce and it removes most of the assumptions. All primary load bearing welds is an invitation to guess.
Inspection method per weld, not a blanket noteVisual is cheap, penetrant and magnetic particle are modest, ultrasonic and radiographic bring a technician and a schedule.
Extent stated, 100 per cent or a spot percentageThe percentage moves the price substantially and nobody can guess it from NDT per drawing.
Acceptance standard for the inspectionThe method finds indications. The standard decides whether an indication is a defect.
Dimensional report requirement and drawing revisionA report against a superseded revision is a common and entirely avoidable argument.

Stress relief called out, or the question askedWrite stress relieve after welding, before machining. Not stress relieve on its own. If unsure, ask in the RFQ and let the quoting shops advise.
Machining allowance stated, not assumedA common starting point is 3 to 6 mm on faces and about 3 mm on a bore radius, more on long or flexible sections.
Which faces and bores are machined, marked clearlyThe shop should not have to work out which of forty surfaces are the machined ones.
Separate tolerances for welded and machined featuresISO 13920 class on the structure, a normal drawing tolerance on the machined features. One general tolerance across both gets ignored.
Datums on faces that will be machinedA datum on an as-welded surface moves with the distortion, and every feature referenced to it moves with it.
The condition each geometric tolerance applies toFlat within 0.1 mm after stress relief and finish machining. Otherwise nobody knows when it is checked.

Coating system named, by standard where possibleSurface preparation, primer and topcoat with a total film thickness. Vague finish notes get vague prices.
A marked up view showing masked faces and threadsMasking is manual and charged. A frame with forty tapped holes on five faces is not the same job as one with two big faces.
If galvanised, the machining sequence agreedThe part goes into zinc at around 450 degrees C and moves. On machined weldments the usual order is galvanise first, then machine.
Preservative and packing for bare machined facesBare machined steel rusts between the shop and your floor. Say what protects it and how the part is packed.
Required date, and IncotermA heavy frame is expensive to move and sometimes an oversize load. Settle who carries it early.
